Sea Person

whenever i have been asked whether i liked mountains or seas,i have written "both".having spent consecutive vacations in the mountains,i had really forgotten how seasides felt.
i am in the andamans after 13 years.i remember having been here in 1996 when my father was posted in Port Blair.after that,i really dont remember having taken a trip to the seas except that one swim in Digha with really sleazy people in a really dirty beach.
seas do to me what mountains can never do.they are like real people who act slightly coy when you dont get too close to them-they come to you once in a while, touch your feet and invite you, with alluring hues, to get closer.and once you do get close, they begin playing with you like some long lost childhood friend-greeting you, throwing you off your feet, letting you get up again and embracing you into that vast blue body of theirs.and when you finally come out of the seas, you feel fresh just as you would feel after meeting a friend after years.
unlike mountains,i can go on looking at seas for hours at end-anytime of the day.unlike mountains which never change, seas become green, white and blue infront of your eyes.the waves come to you with thoughts and once they retrace, you feel they've taken away all the dirt that was in you.
seas calm me down in a way mountains never can.
yes,i am a sea person.

p.s: the picture was taken at the Radha Nagar Beach in Havelock Island,Andaman. incidentally, this beach was declared the best beach in Asia by the Time magazine

I feel I'm a sea person too...and buckets dear, I have to tell you this (and my hubby just seconded my thoughts after I read this post aloud to him)....I strongly feel you would make a great writer...please, oh please, don't limit this potential to your blog...allow the world to perceive what we just did...a person who makes life come to life.

Hey there girl! I really love this one because all of me echoes your emotion. I love the sea and the rainbow of feelings that it provokes in me. It's a beautiful piece.... :)

what a beach!!! i'm so jealous of u :) Ya, seas do have that very "human" quality about them, that stony mountains do not have...

Great post! I like your description of the ocean as a person, I've often felt the same way. I think I'm a sea person too, except when I see the Himalayas. They have an entirely different charm and they change hues too you know :) And yes, what a beach that is!

@Angika:yes they become golden at sunrise and pink at sunset...having taken trips to mountain for the last four years, seas were a welcome change :)

yet another wonderful piece. The write up is as peaceful as the sea can get early evenings. Your write up reminded me that its high time I actually spend a vacation by the sea side. A couple of days back I was driving by the Pacific coast and the sea was beautiful. I long to go and spend sometime at a sea side and rejuvenate myself. The sea breeze is lovely. Am just too tired of working.

I'm rather a mountain freak..i feel its qte refreshing n dere's sumthng new n unique about each landscape in the midst of hills..btw, aftr goin thru your post maybe i'll view seas frm a changed perspective.."the waves come to you with thoughts and once they retrace, you feel they've taken away all the dirt that was in you."..loved this particular line a lot.

Love love love how you described the sea! I lived in Chennai and that's the only time I was on a beach, but never really in the clean, peaceful, blue, sunny way that I wanted to be. But whenever I picture the sea, it's always like that. I even like the idea of a stormy sea, especially when I'm low or angry.

OMG, Havelock Island! I lived in Port Blair for nearly three years as a child. This brought back so many memories.
The Andamans have got to be the only place where you could go to the beach any time of day and find no one else. 'Twas beautiful.
We returned to Kolkata in 1999. But my fondest memories are of Port Blair.
Corbyn's Cove was a weekend haunt. Hope the Tsunami hasn't turned the landscape completely unrecognizable now.
